On April 23, 2025 Dattner Architects’ Deniz Secilmis and Jen Switala will present the master plan of Alafia, together with Julia Howe from SCAPE. The 25+ acre mixed-use development is planned as Passive House. A pillar in the comprehensive sustainable and resilient planning and design that is transforming the decommissioned psychiatric institution into a wellness-oriented new development with over 2,400 new apartments. The largest site in New York State’s Vital Brooklyn Initiative, Dattner Architects and SCAPE master planned the site to address a historically underserved area’s chronic social, economic, and health disparities. Our clients’ (L&M, Apex, RiseBoro Community Partnership, and Services for the Underserved) commitment to applying lessons from naturally occurring communities of health and longevity to break down barriers to health and wellbeing created a powerful vision for the site. Registration is open for this free event.
In May, the series will continue with “Passive House at Scale”, for which we will be joined with Steven Winter Associates (May) and in June “Net Zero ready – Planning and Balancing long term energy use” with Salas O’Brien, Cosentini, Highmark (June.)
