Harrison Station Breaks Ground

Port Authority of New York & New Jersey and a bevy of politicians gathered today at the Harrison PATH station for a groundbreaking. The aging original station, ill-suited to serve the growing city of Harrison, is being replaced by four new glass and steel headhouses. When it opens in 2017, the new station will accommodate the new 10-car PATH trains and the area’s increasing ridership needs. A key stop on the Newark-World Trade Center PATH line, the station also serves the popular Red Bull Arena. “Investment to modernize the 105-year-old PATH rail system has been a vital Port Authority priority in recent years and replacing the aging Harrison station is a cornerstone of our efforts,’’ said Port Authority Chairman David Samson. “It is essential that we continue efforts to enhance mass-transit ridership in our congested region, with our new PATH trains, updated stations and computerized track signal equipment.’’ “As commuter ridership and transportation needs grow, we must continue to make necessary infrastructure modernization investments,” said Governor Christie. The Harrison Station is being designed by Dattner Architects / Parsons Brinckerhoff Joint Venture.

Blooming Garden

The Dallas Arboretum gave the press a sneak preview of the 7-acre Rory Meyers Children’s Adventure Garden. Joslyn Taylor at D Moms Daily describes the garden as “total magic” and provides plenty of snapshots of the interactive spaces and exhibitions. Dallas News gives us a broader view with their documentary slide show. The “Walk in the Clouds” seems to be a hit with children and adults alike. We look forward to the grand opening later this year!

Play Hard Another Day!

June 26, 2013 Quoting Richard Dattner in 1969, "The most interesting place in the typical playground is the drinking fountain," the Heinz Architectural Center at the Carnegie Museum of Art opened The Playground Project on June 10. The exhibition, which includes playgrounds from Europe, the United States, and Japan from the latter half of the 20th century, takes a hard line look at the way we approach childhood, risk, public space, and education as today's playgrounds have become liability driven, sanitized, and risk free, i.e. fun free, environments. The exhibition includes a 1972 Lozziwurm play sculpture by Swiss artist Yvan Pestalozzi installed at the museum's entrance, the first US installation of this interactive play sculpture. On October 5, The Playground Project will become part of the 2013 Carnegie International, which brings together 35 artists from 19 countries. The Playground Project is open until March 16, 2014, but will be closed from August 12 through October 4. Read about it in the New York Times: The Work Behind Child’s Play.

Green Goes to Gold

Via Verde – The Green Way has achieved LEED Gold certification! The affordable housing project features 34,000 square feet of green roofs that offer active gardening, reduce storm water run-off, and enhance building insulation. For on-site irrigation, rainwater run-off is collected and recycled through an underground concrete cistern and five 180-liter tanks. Photovoltaic panels provide 66kw of energy to power lighting in common areas. The development uses high-efficiency building systems and EnergyStar lighting and appliances, and low-flow fixtures. Enhanced commissioning during construction ensures the design intent is met and that systems are properly installed and balanced. The combined result is 25% energy use reduction. While equipped with central heating, Via Verde is engineered to operate efficiently through passive techniques. The building envelope, a prefabricated rain screen panel system, provides a sealed, well-insulated, “breathing” enclosure and sunshades diffuse direct solar radiation. Large low-E glass windows—typically on two exposures to promote cross-ventilation—reflect solar energy and provide abundant daylighting, while ceiling fans and operable windows reduce the need for air conditioning. Natural lighting in stairwells promotes a sense of safety and  encourages use as part of NYC’s Active Design program. Residents are educated on the building's green energy features in order to promote energy optimization and sustainable living. A display in the main lobby shows energy statistics, such as the solar panel outputs in real time. The combined effort champions sustainable affordable housing and healthy living.

Riverbank at 20!

Riverbank State Park is celebrating its 20th Anniversary. Dattner Architects began designing it in 1978 – and construction was completed fifteen years later, transforming the rooftop of a 28.5-acre infrastructure pier into one of New York State’s busiest state parks. Located along the Hudson River, the park runs from 137th Street to 145th Street in Harlem. Riverbank includes 23 acres of playing fields, picnic areas, and playgrounds; a covered skating rink; a 50-meter indoor swimming pool; a multi-use athletic building; a carousel, and more! New York City’s busiest state park, Riverbank has served over 60 million visitors since it opened.

Pier Review

Principal Daniel Heuberger AIA, LEED AP spoke with World Architecture News about the possibilities for New York City's Pier 40 on the Hudson River. Working with The Durst Organization and C&K Properties as the developers, Dattner Architects has designed a facility that would be self-supporting, complementary to Hudson River Park, and provide more amenities more efficiently, including more parking and recreational spaces, tech offices, galleries, as well as retail and cafes. Designs are under review before proceeding with the next phases.
Our entry for the adAPT NYC micro-unit housing competition -- one of four finalists --  is included in "Making Room: New Models for Housing New Yorkers" at the Museum of the City of New York. The exhibition showcases innovative design solutions that explore ways to better accommodate New York City’s changing demographics and challenges a number of existing building codes and typologies. A number of programs and lectures accompany the exhibition during its run until September 15.
Via Verde is part of the Center for Architecture’s Helfand Spotlight Series, which features current topics in New York architecture. The exhibition includes construction drawings, the green living guides that assist new owners and renters, and  photography of all phases of the recently-completed building. The award-winning project will be on display January 31 - February 27, 2013.
Reporting in the New York Observer, Matt Chaban outlines The Durst Organization's plans to revitalize Pier 40, a site that Dattner Architects has been studying for years. The concept design, developed by Dattner Architects, calls for more efficient operations and added commercial and retail space. By consolidating parking on one level with car stackers, spaces could be increased and over 500,000 square feet given to commercial, retail, and recreational uses.
Dattner Architects’ firm leadership is helping to frame the profession's response to climate change in New York City. William Stein FAIA was appointed to the Urban Green’s Building Resiliency Task Force, created at the behest of the City of New York. The Task Force is reviewing current building codes and operational practices, and making recommendations on how they could be amended to improve building resiliency and to facilitate recovery. Kirsten Sibilia Assoc. AIA, LEED AP will co-chair the Communications Task Force for AIANY’s Super Storm Sandy response which will involve coordinating the efforts of collaborating organizations.
