Harriet Andronikides, AIA, Associate has worked on a variety of project types, including parks, multi-family residential, and performing arts venues. She strives for clear and meaningful communication through all phases of a project, and particularly enjoys the Construction Administration phase where she can see the building come to life. As a New Yorker, Harriet has an endless fascination for the built environment and the inner workings of the city.

Heather McKinstry, AIA, LEED AP, CPHC, Studio Director, Senior Associate believes that architecture’s most important role is to create inclusive, healthy, and sustainable environments for our communities, helping to build a more equitable world. After completing her thesis on disaster relief housing, her commitment to environmentalism and community focused urbanism led her to work creating spaces for all New Yorkers while minimizing the environmental impact of new buildings.

Rem Bruhn, AIA, LEED AP BD+C, Senior Associate joined Dattner Architects in 2015, eager to work in a mission-driven firm, designing projects positively influence people’s daily lives. He enjoys working with diverse stakeholder groups, and he takes pride in developing a concept that is carefully considered, from the macroscopic down to the smallest details. With each project he seeks to contribute to the sustainable evolution of our cities.

Patrick McAffrey, AIA, Studio Director, Associate Principal joined the firm as an emerging architect today leads our largest studio. He’s continued to grow with each challenge and excels at every opportunity. Formally trained in both architecture and product design, Patrick’s passion for intelligent urbanism has led him to focus his work on infrastructure and transportation projects, which he believes have profound impact on the building fabric and urban lifestyles they support.

Shefali Sanghvi, AIA, LEED AP BD+C, Fitwel Amb., ENV SP, Director of Sustainability, Associate Principal has over 15 years of experience working in sustainable projects, with an emphasis on resiliency, occupant health and comfort, and energy efficiency. An expert on urban Passive House projects, she is dedicated to designing buildings that are socially, environmentally, and financially sustainable. As the firm’s Director of Sustainability, Shefali serves as a thought leader across Dattner Architects’ studios, and beyond, championing sustainability as integral to architecture. She is a person who identifies opportunities to do things better—and puts in the work to develop a system to make it happen. Like each of the folks being promoted, Shefali is always looking out for the firm.

Philippe has not only excelled as a project manager, studio director, mentor and coach but also used his skills for business development—cultivating new and existing clients to bring in new projects. Via Verde – The Green Way has achieved LEED Gold certification! The affordable housing project features 34,000 square feet of green roofs that offer active gardening, reduce storm water run-off, and enhance building insulation. For on-site irrigation, rainwater run-off is collected and recycled through an underground concrete cistern and five 180-liter tanks. Photovoltaic panels provide 66kw of energy to power lighting in common areas. The development uses high-efficiency building systems and EnergyStar lighting and appliances, and low-flow fixtures. Enhanced commissioning during construction ensures the design intent is met and that systems are properly installed and balanced. The combined result is 25% energy use reduction.
While equipped with central heating, Via Verde is engineered to operate efficiently through passive techniques. The building envelope, a prefabricated rain screen panel system, provides a sealed, well-insulated, “breathing” enclosure and sunshades diffuse direct solar radiation. Large low-E glass windows—typically on two exposures to promote cross-ventilation—reflect solar energy and provide abundant daylighting, while ceiling fans and operable windows reduce the need for air conditioning. Natural lighting in stairwells promotes a sense of safety and encourages use as part of NYC’s Active Design program.
Residents are educated on the building's green energy features in order to promote energy optimization and sustainable living. A display in the main lobby shows energy statistics, such as the solar panel outputs in real time. The combined effort champions sustainable affordable housing and healthy living.

The project in the Brownsville neighborhood of Brooklyn is an initiative of the New York City Housing Authority to provide 100 new units, landscaped areas, and on-site social services. CAMBA will provide on-site social services and employment training for the residents of the building. The site is a parking lot located on Mother Gaston Boulevard between Dumont and Livonia Avenues, and within the Van Dyke Houses campus.

This remarkable complex is the result of a partnership between a leading non-profit, Settlement Housing Fund, and the NYC School Construction Authority. The facility includes three schools and 1000 students as well as a community center with a 25 yard pool, dance studio and outdoor classroom. The entire complex will be managed by Settlement Housing Fund, allowing the gymnasium complex, play yards and other large spaces within the school to be open for off-hour use by the local community.

Via Verde – The Green Way has achieved LEED Gold certification! The affordable housing project features 34,000 square feet of green roofs that offer active gardening, reduce storm water run-off, and enhance building insulation. For on-site irrigation, rainwater run-off is collected and recycled through an underground concrete cistern and five 180-liter tanks. Photovoltaic panels provide 66kw of energy to power lighting in common areas. The development uses high-efficiency building systems and EnergyStar lighting and appliances, and low-flow fixtures. Enhanced commissioning during construction ensures the design intent is met and that systems are properly installed and balanced. The combined result is 25% energy use reduction.
While equipped with central heating, Via Verde is engineered to operate efficiently through passive techniques. The building envelope, a prefabricated rain screen panel system, provides a sealed, well-insulated, “breathing” enclosure and sunshades diffuse direct solar radiation. Large low-E glass windows—typically on two exposures to promote cross-ventilation—reflect solar energy and provide abundant daylighting, while ceiling fans and operable windows reduce the need for air conditioning. Natural lighting in stairwells promotes a sense of safety and encourages use as part of NYC’s Active Design program.
Residents are educated on the building's green energy features in order to promote energy optimization and sustainable living. A display in the main lobby shows energy statistics, such as the solar panel outputs in real time. The combined effort champions sustainable affordable housing and healthy living.

Sibilia is an associate member of the American Institute of Architects, and she is active in the AIA New York Chapter. Currently she is serving as the Outreach Co-Chair for the Post Sandy Initiative Report, which will be released in May. Dattner Architects will design a new mid-rise residential building at the Van Dyke Supportive Housing Development Project for CAMBA Housing Ventures. The project in the Brownsville neighborhood of Brooklyn is an initiative of the New York City Housing Authority to provide 100 new units, landscaped areas, and on-site social services. CAMBA will provide on-site social services and employment training for the residents of the building. The site is a parking lot located on Mother Gaston Boulevard between Dumont and Livonia Avenues, and within the Van Dyke Houses campus.
New York City Housing Authority and New York City Housing Preservation and Development selected the development team of Blue Sea Development Company, Pennrose Properties, Duvernay + Brooks, and Rosenberg Housing Group (Blue Sea & Partners) for Prospect Plaza in Ocean Hill-Brownsville in Brooklyn. The 200,000 square foot development across a 4.5-acre site will provide 364 new, affordable and public housing units. It will be constructed in three phases and include space for a new supermarket, community facility space with a rooftop greenhouse, and a recreation area.
Via Verde is one of five finalists in the running for the Rudy Bruner Award for Urban Excellence. The Rudy Bruner Award is unique in providing funds for programming and development of projects that support placemaking and social health. The biennial accolade seeks to identify exemplary urban places nationwide and celebrate their impact on the economic, social, and physical fabric of our cities.
Principal Daniel Heuberger AIA, LEED AP spoke with World Architecture News about the possibilities for New York City's Pier 40 on the Hudson River. Working with The Durst Organization and C&K Properties as the developers, Dattner Architects has designed a facility that would be self-supporting, complementary to Hudson River Park, and provide more amenities more efficiently, including more parking and recreational spaces, tech offices, galleries, as well as retail and cafes. Designs are under review before proceeding with the next phases.
Our entry for the adAPT NYC micro-unit housing competition -- one of four finalists -- is included in "Making Room: New Models for Housing New Yorkers" at the Museum of the City of New York. The exhibition showcases innovative design solutions that explore ways to better accommodate New York City’s changing demographics and challenges a number of existing building codes and typologies. A number of programs and lectures accompany the exhibition during its run until September 15.
Via Verde is part of the Center for Architecture’s Helfand Spotlight Series, which features current topics in New York architecture. The exhibition includes construction drawings, the green living guides that assist new owners and renters, and photography of all phases of the recently-completed building. Reporting in the New York Observer, Matt Chaban outlines The Durst Organization's plans to revitalize Pier 40, a site that Dattner Architects has been studying for years. The concept design, developed by Dattner Architects, calls for more efficient operations and added commercial and retail space. By consolidating parking on one level with car stackers, spaces could be increased and over 500,000 square feet given to commercial, retail, and recreational uses.
Dattner Architects’ firm leadership is helping to frame the profession's response to climate change in New York City. William Stein FAIA was appointed to the Urban Green’s Building Resiliency Task Force, created at the behest of the City of New York. The Task Force is reviewing current building codes and operational practices, and making recommendations on how they could be amended to improve building resiliency and to facilitate recovery. Metropolis magazine's Paul Makovsky follows up on the MoMA's "Century of the Child: Growing by Design, 1900-2000" by interviewing the children of the designers featured in the exhibition. To find out what is was like to be the child of a designer or architect investigating ideas of progressive play Makovsky tracked down five children who shared their thoughts, including Ben Dattner, son of Richard. Ben reflects that he and his sister, Laura, "felt a unique send of ownership and pride" in their father's playgrounds.

Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz, Jr. and Councilmember Helen D. Foster came out today to celebrate the ribbon cutting and opening of the New Settlement Community Center. The Center is part of the New Settlement Community Campus that combines three schools, which opened earlier this year, a health clinic and outdoor play spaces, with an aquatics center, dance studio, green roof learning terrace, cooking classroom and multipurpose spaces.
We are proud to announce that Via Verde has won a Jack Kemp Workforce Housing Models of Excellence Award. The award is given to workforce housing developments that represent outstanding achievements in innovative financing, unique construction methodologies, strong public/private partnerships, and replicability to achieve workforce housing affordability. The announcement came today from the Urban Land Institute's Fall Meeting.
Via Verde and the Cordish Tennis Pavilion join the 2012 AIANY Subway Show, Design by New York, in the West 4th Street Subway Station. The exhibition includes 188 projects on view in the station until November 4. The Center for Architecture is hosting an opening reception on Wednesday, October 10 from 6-8pm at the Center. After last Friday's ribbon cutting, the 90-unit Concern Heights Apartments officially opened six-stories of studio, one-bedroom and two-bedroom apartments. The Concern Heights Apartments provides Concern for Independent Living's with its first mixed-tenant building, providing housing and supportive services to formerly homeless individuals recovering from mental illness and to low-income individuals and families from the community. Michael Hogan, Commissioner, New York State Office of Mental Health, praised the building and the program, predicting that it "will become known as the cornerstone of the revitalization of this Brooklyn neighborhood."

The awards recognizing the multifamily industry’s most noteworthy people, companies and properties were bestowed last night at a ceremony in New York City.
New Settlement Community Campus is featured in Edgeless School: Design for Learning, the Center for Architecture's exhibition which runs from October 1 through January 19. Dattner Architects' newest school will join eighteen other 21st century U.S. school buildings that blur distinctions between learning needs, approaches, and environments. Riverbank State Park is featured in Mariana Mogilevich's article "The Architecture of Remediation: Riverbank Park" in Praxis: a journal of writing + building. Using the clean-up efforts of the Hudson River from the 1960s, Mariana examines the socio-political aspects of sustainable development that converged in the environmental, infrastructure, and public recreation programs of the Riverbank State Park ultimately designed by Dattner Architects and completed in 1993.
MTA Capital Construction has posted some amazing new photographs of the Number 7 Line Extension under construction on Manhattan's west side. Designed by Parsons Brinckerhoff with Dattner Architects, the extension provides a new station at 34th Street Station, with a new station entrance onto a public plaza, and four supporting systems buildings that provide power, ventilation and egress for the station and the running tunnel portions of the line extension.

Today the New Settlement Community Center opened in Mount Eden section of the Bronx and was celebrated at a morning press conference by Mayor Bloomberg and Chancellor Walcott. This remarkable complex is the result of a partnership between a leading non-profit, Settlement Housing Fund, and the NYC School Construction Authority. The facility includes three schools and 1000 students as well as a community center with a 25 yard pool, dance studio and outdoor classroom. The entire complex will be managed by Settlement Housing Fund, allowing the gymnasium complex, play yards and other large spaces within the school to be open for off-hour use by the local community.
