The Steiner NYC studios have become the largest film and television production facilities outside of Hollywood. Located within the Brooklyn Navy Yard, the facilities include the renovated 25 Washington Avenue—a historic building constructed for the Navy in the 1940s. A sustainable adaptive-reuse approach has transformed the building to serve as pre- and post-production support spaces as well as a new film school.

Dattner Architects renovated the abandoned, outmoded military facility, restoring the art moderne façade to State Historic Preservation standards, including replacement windows and mechanical systems, to meet SHPO approvals and contribute to the building’s LEED Silver Certification. The interior renovation of the vacant industrial building included the addition of new freight elevators and structural interventions to accommodate column-free studios, support, and catering facilities.
The Steiner Studio complex of buildings, streets, and lots represents a renaissance for the Brooklyn Navy Yard. State-of-the-art facilities for the production of a full range of entertainment and information media are now in full operation where 75,000 persons once labored in defense of our country. Steiner Studios is a self-contained urban precinct within the Navy Yard—organized around a central street defined by steel-truss entrance gates.
