As a finalist in Governor Cuomo’s design competition for LaGuardia Airport, Dattner Architects’ bold ideas were incorporated into the Governor’s Advisory Committee’s Recommendations for transformation of the airport. The design team developed an incremental series of landside, waterside, and airside multimodal improvements, including a unified terminal concept that establishes a contemporary gateway for both arriving and departing travelers.

Planned with the traveler in mind, the Port LaGuardia concept recognizes a shift from Manhattan-centric planning to regionally integrated planning, acknowledging the many nodes of activity and commerce in the New York Metropolitan Area and the critical role a robust infrastructure plays in creating a modern, resilient, and sustainable city.

With the reconceptualization of the airport as a nexus of global, national, regional, and local transportation systems, Port LaGuardia is integrated into the urban fabric of the city and the continuity of the region.

Port LaGuardia proposes seamless connectivity between existing and new modes of transportation to the airport and includes new AirTrain, Subway, Water Taxi and Ferry connections to a new Transportation Hub at the airport. On Airside, the team’s unified, expanded terminal concept, with multiple AirTrain stops along a contiguous, multilevel circulation spine, creates a highly-functional, world-class airport that is a welcoming gateway to the city and region.

Renewed Waterside Connection

As a fully integrated multi-modal development, the vision for a renewed waterside connection introduces ferry service and new water taxi routes that will offer unique City views while shuttling passengers to and from midtown, the boroughs, Westchester, and Long Island.

Ferry and water taxi service would be integrated with the new Transportation Hub, providing seamless connections to AirTrain stations at LaGuardia terminals, a new subway station for the extended N/Q line, bus routes, taxi pick-up and drop-off, and automobile access.

Port LaGuardia recognizes the natural and historical relationship between the airport location and the water’s edge. The introduction of ferry service restores operations at the historic Marine Air Terminal through creation of a 21st century hub with a conference center, hotel, restaurants, retail, and exhibit spaces.
